Bordeaux
Bordeaux is the largest and most
important fine wine producing region of France. The production is mostly AC, plus a small amount of vin de table. Bordeaux wines are often sold as generic
but are now more usually seen with the name of the property or Château displayed than that of the appellation. It is the appellation that tells you
where the wine is from and what it should be like, while the Château, domaine or negociant represents an individual interpretation of that appellation.
Climate: Bordeaux has a mild, humid climate which is influenced by the sea and rivers. The winters are temperate and the summers are warm and long.
Soil: There are many types of soil but generally it is gravel, clay or sand over limestone.
Grapes: Red wines are made from three varieties - Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot - which are blended together to give a particular style.
Cabernet Sauvignon & Cabernet Franc give high tannin and acidity to the wine with an aroma that suggests blackcurrants. These produce good wine is several wine regions of the world.
Merlot is a grape variety which produces higher alcohol, has a softer taste than the Cabernet. More Merlot grapes are grown in Bordeaux than Cabernet.
The appellations of Bordeaux are: Bordeaux AC - Medoc AC - Graves AC - Sauternes AC - St. Emilion AC - Premieres Côtes de Bordeaux AC - Pomerol |
