Dominating the Rhône Valley from the foothills of the Mont Ventoux, Domaine Durban enjoys stunning views of the area. The wines are special too. Muscat de Beaumes de Venise is undoubtedly the best of all the Muscat wines made in Southern France and Durban is considered the best estate. The wines are a pure delight with the distinctive Muscat flavors of flowers, tropical fruit and honey. The perfect dessert wine but also delicious with foie gras, melon and Roquefort cheese. "In the Rhône, you see Beaumes de Venise served as an aperitif, but I like it after dinner. Its perfume of rose petals and honey is graceful enough that it doesn't weigh you down after a big meal, and yet it is nectarous enough to feel like dessert. "The 62 acre Muscat vineyard of Domaine de Durban produces what many observers feel is the finest Muscat Beaumes de Venise of the appellation. It is always an extroverted and flamboyant wine, even in rain-plagued, lighter vintages. The Domaine de Durban, run by Bernard and Jean-Pierre Leydier, is perched on a steep hillside above the village, with a spectacular view of the countryside. While the Leydiers have lightened the style produced by their father, this remains an intense, concentrated, viscous Beaumes de Venise with striking flavors and a haunting fragrance. For years, this wine was sold without a vintage, but in 1985 the Leydiers began to vintage date the wine, a critical as well as intelligent modification given not only the short shelf life of these wines, but also the vintage consciousness of most purchasers.
