Wine Description
A single-vineyard, 100% old-vine Negroamaro from the Patriglione parcel in the Salento area. The vines in this parcel are up to 40 years old and are planted in the traditional, low-yielding “alberello” (little bunch) system. The grapes are hand harvested later than usual to concentrate their aromas and flavors, and to provide a more powerful structure. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 12 months in French barriques (Allier, Nevers and Tronçais).
Tasting Notes
Patriglione is ruby red in color with orange reflections. It offers a massive, yet balanced body and a complex array of aromas, ranging from dried cherry and raisin to leather, licorice and tar. Its intense and persistent finish is framed by elegant tannins. Patriglione is full of personality and has great potential for aging. Big, complex and intense, Patriglione is the ideal companion of barbecued steaks, kebobs, roast beef, game, Italian cured meats and medium-aged cheeses. The first vintage was produced in 1975.

The Best Wines of Southern Italy
"Medium-deep ruby with a garnet rim. Sweet, deep, very pure aromas of ripe red cherry, balsamic plum, raspberry liqueur, licorice and dried flowers. Very large-scaled and ripe, but kept fresh by a cool mineral nuance and fine acidity. A wonderfully opulent, tactile wine that offers a smorgasbord of strawberry rhubarb, red cherry, licorice and mineral flavors. Sweet and lush on the long, mineral-tinged finish, this multilayered, highly concentrated wine is the best Patriglione since the sublime 1990."

The Best of Central and Southern Italy
"Taurino’s 2000 Patriglione (Negroamaro) is a quirky wine with tons of personality. This rich, full-bodied red offers plenty of over-ripe plums, prunes and sweet spices, with outstanding length on the palate. It should continue to drink well for another decade. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018."

Aglianico, Anyone?
"One of Puglia’s longest established quality wineries; a quality leader in the region. Makes only IGT wines (to protest the high yields allowed by the DOC), and they are very impressive: Salento Rosso Patriglione and the cru Notarpanaro are the wines to seek for their elegance and aging ability."
