As soon as the pilgrims set foot on the 'new world' in the 15th century, they strived to establish successful vineyards so as to make the beloved beverage they were so accustomed to enjoying in Europe. These early attempts had varying levels of success, but, admittedly, many more failures. Part of the trials and errors were based on the fact that America was home to a different vine species, called Vitis labrusca (as opposed to the European species that we know today, Vitis vinifera), which produced a mediocre wine that was often vaguely described as 'foxy.' Part of it was simply getting to know the climate, the new landscape, and everything else that winemakers in Europe had been exploring and perfecting for centuries.
Yet, regardless of these humble beginnings, wine regions in the northeast today have become sophisticated producers of quality wines, particularly in New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island, where Vitis vinifera vines have taken successful root. New York has several regions of excellent winemaking reputation, including the Finger Lakes near the Canadian border, the idyllic Hudson Valley (just an hour north of New York City), and the maritime vineyards of Long Island.
Winebow has assembled a collection of some of the best available from these northeastern states. Our portfolio here is based on family-owned, artisanal wineries who are demonstrated innovators in their field. Their diverse and high-quality offerings will undoubtedly redefine the northeast for you.
