Austria

The small but picturesque country boasts a winemaking tradition in Austria that dates back to Celtic times. During the Austro-Hungarian Empire heyday, sweet white wines were considered among the most fashionable wines in European Courts, but today it is the dry white wines from Grüner Veltliner and Riesling that rule, followed by unique reds from Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt.  In fact, Austrian winemakers adhere to some of the most rigid industry regulations in place today. Many of the label terms will be identifiable to fans of German wines, such as ‘Auslese’ for late-picked, fully ripe grapes and ‘Trocken’ for dry, but these are wines drier and fuller in style than their German counterparts.

Since being ‘rediscovered’ by sommeliers - these food-friendly wines now populate the finest restaurant wine lists. Winebow invites you to discover the quality for yourself … and where else but in our exceptional portfolio of small, estate owned properties?
